Yeah I agree with you. I usually describe it as a document collaboration tool best used when working on a project (personal or professional) with a group of people.

I don't think it will become mainstream either, but I do think it will still become a popular and well used tool over the next years.

I think the confusion surrounding google wave is slowing it's adoption almost as much as the invite only status, but much like GMail invites, it will improve.

For web conferences you should try http://www.showdocument.com ,
Great for online teaching and collaborating. I use it for working on my designs with other in my field.
Its free and pretty simple - you just upload your file and invite others to view it together.

I'm not sure at the moment. Depends on what you expect people to use it for in the end, I don't think it'll be adopted for everything as Google seems to want, but I'm pretty sure it'll get a lot of use by the people who need better collaboration and planning tools.
